SUSTAINABILITY

MVOmnisport and green key
As the host of the UCI Junior Track World Championships, we need a venue that is also strongly committed to sustainability. With our partner Omnisport Apeldoorn, many initiatives have already been implemented to promote sustainability, including the Green Key Gold certification.

Event initiatives
As shown, a lot is already being done in and around Omnisport. These are mainly initiatives that the UCI Junior Track World Championships cannot change (such as solar panels, heat pumps, bus stops). Therefore, the focus of the event is on areas where we can still have an impact:

Transport/ logistics
There is a strong focus on partnerships with local suppliers. This reduces the distance traveled by our suppliers and helps lower CO2 emissions.
We are also putting significant effort into reconsidering transport strategies. When traveling to Omisport Apeldoorn, please follow this plan when choosing your transportation:

  1. The first choice is to walk to Omnisport;
  2. The second choice is to bike;
  3. After that, consider public transport (train/ bus);
  4. If you are still coming by car, choose an electric vehicle whenever possible.

Catering
The first gains for sustainability is achieved in the purchasing of goods. Anything we do not purchase is also not thrown away. We consciously choose products (or avoid them) in order to control the amount of wate that remains. Our crew primarily eats vegetarion, and our public catering is also mainly vegetarian. Porcelain is used wherever possible, minimizing the use of disposable tableware. Our chefs prepare food as freshly as possible. Legally, food must be presented shortly after preparation. Making fresh food means less waste. We are also seeking partnerships with initiatives like Too Good To Go. If there is leftover food at the end of the day, you may just be able to grab a delicious sandwich for the road at a very low price.

Waste
We carefully seperate waste, which is evident in the various waste islands, with 5 types of bins being used. This is implemented both in the public areas and in the center field for the teams, as well as backstage for the crew. PET-bottles for a good cause: all our PET bottles are collected and returned to our supplier. The deposit goed to the Wildlands Foundation. Less waste and helping animals at the same time. Our Gream Team ensures that this waste is correctly processed in the waste compactors at the back of Omnisport Apeldoorn. By purchasing less, we also produce less waste. This was briefly mentioned in the catering section, but it plays a big role in our waste management. When there is waste, we try to give it a second life. For example, we turn our event banners into shopping bags for sale at our next event. Have you seen the bags from the 2018 Track Cycling World Championships and the 2019 Track Cycling European Championships?

Communication
You will regularly see information about sustainability, your sustainable choices, and how you can contribute. Without communication, you wouldn't know about our initiatives.
